Planning your home school visit to AGSA

AGSA Education are delighted to welcome home school groups to the Gallery. To ensure a rewarding and enjoyable experience for your children, we encourage you to plan a visit that allows for flexibility.

Choose the right activity for your group

AGSA offers a variety of engaging programs tailored to different age groups. Home school groups are eligible for equity prices for programs and school exhibition tickets. To qualify for a subsidised price simply provide a copy of your home education exemption letter from the Department of Education. When booking read the workshop descriptions to consider whether these meet the needs and interests of your children.

We sometimes receive requests to undertake multiple activities on the one day. On paper it might seem achievable, but this can be tiring for some children. A self-guided experience can often be an enjoyable way to experience works of art on display. We have a variety of resources to support a self-guided visits that promote critical and creative thinking.

Group Sizes

If you are self-guiding please split your students into supervised groups. We recommend these ratios:
Preschool – year 2: 1 adult to 6 students
Years 3–7: 1 adult to 10 students
Years 8–12: 1 adult to 15 students

Similar ratios also apply to visiting ticketed exhibitions. One class ticket will include entry for 30 children and up to 4 supporting adults. Likewise, if you are bringing 6 children, one class ticket will include entry for one supporting adult. Extra general public adult tickets can be purchased separately.

Booking Expectations

Please read the Terms and Conditions carefully before confirming your visit.

If you’ve booked a guided tour with one of our volunteer guides or a facilitated session such as The Studio or a Drawing in the Gallery workshop, please note that our sessions are often booked back to back. Late arrivals may find they have a reduced time. Arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your session to maximise time in your programmed activity.

Please also note that our volunteer Gallery Guides prepare in advance to deliver high-quality experience, and our program facilitators are paid to deliver the Studio and education programs.

Last minute cancellations, or changing activities on the fly, are difficult to manage when staff are ready and prepared. We appreciate your understanding in following the booked itinerary.

Tips for a smooth visit

  • Arrive on time and check in at the atrium desk. Watch our ‘What to Expect Video’ to help your children prepare.
  • Bring only what you need—large bags and food are not permitted in gallery spaces.
  • Encourage students to engage respectfully with works of art and other visitors.
  • Allow time for breaks and reflection
  • If children require a break, we recommend the grassed area in the courtyard, or the Asian galleries by the Information desk as quiet or spaces to retreat to.

We look forward to welcoming your group and supporting your learning journey through art.
