Curiosity Tours
No art knowledge required
Welcome to the Art Gallery of South Australia. Whether you visit the Gallery regularly or you are a first time visitor, the suggested self-led tours below will help you engage with works of art in new way. Best of all - they are suitable for visitors of any age.
Exploring the Gallery independently or with family and friends needn’t be a daunting experience. You do not need to be an art expert or know anything about the works of art you are about to encounter.
We want you to have an enjoyable experience and discover works of art that pique your interest, or encourage you to ask questions or want to know more.
These self-guided Curiosity Tours encourage long-looking, help you to find a personal ‘way-in’ or connection to a work of art – and to perhaps linger for longer at a work you may not have noticed before. The prompts on the following pages suggest alternative ways to look, think critically and come up with creative ideas of your own.
These prompts can be used in any part of the Gallery. You might like to begin in the Elder Wing which displays primarily Australian Art, or the Melrose Wing of International Art.
Remember, you don't need to see everything. Take your time with the works of art, perhaps aim to look at just five pieces, then take a break and come back again another day.
