Book Launch - Dot, Circle & Frame: The Making of Papunya Tula Art by Dr John Kean

In 1971, at Papunya (210 kilometres west of Mparntwe), a revolutionary new form of cultural expression emerged. Among an exceptional cohort of ‘painting men’, Kaapa Tjampitjinpa, Tim Leura, Clifford Possum and Johnny Warangula stood out. Dot Circle and Frame reveals their role in making Australia’s most internationally significant artform. This ‘gang of four’, closely related artists, deployed their inherited iconography while exploring poetic possibilities offered by paint on canvas. This lavishly illustrated book draws on social history, visual anthropology, and formal art analysis to identify how the key innovations that informed contemporary desert art were realised. Dot Circle and Frame examines lived experience and totemic associations of the artists to show how a new vision of ceremony and Country was assembled. Dot Circle and Frame leads the reader toward a deeper understanding of this critical juncture, as four artists claimed a pivotal space in the history of art.

John will discuss how works on display in the South Australian Art Gallery are instrumental in the history of Papunya Tula painting.
