  • WALL LABEL: A Beautiful Line: Italian prints from Mantegna to Piranesi, 2012

This print belongs to Domenico’s original series of twenty-four etchings ‘Picturesque Ideas on the Theme of the Flight into Egypt’. In the series Domenico depicts the  journey of Joseph, Mary and the infant Christ Child to Egypt as told in the New Testament. Domenico describes the Holy Family, who are accompanied by a magnificent angel, with a lively, wiry line. Domenico also included huddled men in turbans in the scene, whose appearance is similar to those in his father Giambattista’s Scherzi di Fantasia.
