Tarnanthi - The art and legacy of Trevor Nickolls – interpreted by Kat Bell
19 Oct – 16 Nov 2025
This exhibition explores the artistic legacy of Trevor Nickolls through innovative interpretations of his themes and narratives by First Nations curator and artist Kat Bell, who blends painting with digital media to create immersive First Nations art and stories. Dubbed the ‘father of urban Aboriginal art’, Nickolls created powerful visual statements that commented on the impacts of colonial engagement. His recurring theme of ‘Dreamtime to Machinetime’ depicted the transition from the traditional to the mechanised world, which he often represented as dystopian. Examples of Nickolls’ art date from the 1970s and 2010s.
