Pascale Giorgi’s wide-ranging artistic practice often draws on her cultural heritage as an Italo-Australian, as she playfully subverts symbols and expressions of classical Italian culture. Ode to Bricklayers pays homage to the creation of a brick replica of the Tower of Pisa in a suburban backyard in Albany, Western Australia. Each screen tells a different story: the history of the Tower of Pisa, the story of the replica’s immigrant Italian builder, and Giorgi making mudbricks at her mother’s home as she tries to understand her place in all this.
