Floating Worlds: Prints from Osaka & Kyoto

Opening in January 2027, Floating Worlds: Prints from Osaka & Kyoto explores the pleasure, fashion and cultural life that flourished in Japan's Kamigata region during the Edo period (1603–1868). Inspired by the vibrant urban entertainment districts known as the ukiyo, or 'floating world', artists created images that captured the style and culture of the era. Featuring actors of the Kabuki theatre, samurai warriors, ghosts, beauties and landscapes, Floating Worlds traces a dynamic tradition of woodblock printmaking born from a prosperous era of artistry.

Created between c.1790 and c.1900, these works are collectively known as kamigata ukiyo-e, 'pictures (e) of the floating world (ukiyo)'. Renowned for their craftsmanship and distinctive visual language, they reveal the unique artistic character of the Kamigata region.

By day, merchants (chōnin) attended to business and family life; by night, they gathered in theatres, cultural salons and pleasure quarters, inspiring a rich visual culture. The popularity of Kabuki theatre fuelled the creation of woodblock prints that celebrated actors and cultural trends. Distinguished by elegance, wit and innovation, these prints offered an escape from everyday life.

Featuring never-before-seen AGSA acquisitions alongside paintings, kimonos and samurai armour, the exhibition reveals an artistic world which celebrated theatre, beauty, fashion and entertainment; offering a glimpse into Japan's renowned 'floating world'.
