As some of the works from Dangerously Modern return to the Elder Wing walls, artist and educator Sasha Grbich considers the extent to which diversity in gender and sexuality formed part of a break with convention for many of the women artists featured in the exhibition.

Grbich engages with the intimate, unconventional female relationships implicit in the show, raising the question — do the social constraints of womanhood need to be rejected for creative life to thrive?
