Tuesday Talk - Camille Bitton discusses John Russell, an Australian at the Heart of French Impressionism
Tue 14 Jul 2026
Hear from Camille Bitton as she discusses Australian artist John Russell and his relationship to the French Impressionist movement in celebration of Bastille Day.
Camille Bitton is a PhD candidate in Space Law at the University of Adelaide. Her research explores the international governance of space resource activities and the legal frameworks needed to ensure their sustainable and responsible development.
Before embarking on her doctoral studies, she built a career in international research management, science diplomacy, and public policy, working with institutions including the University of Adelaide, the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), and the European Commission.
Camille grew up in a family with a deep love of art. Her mother owned an art gallery for several years, and from an early age she developed a strong appreciation for painting, museums, and cultural heritage. While she is particularly drawn to Impressionism and the Italian Renaissance, what fascinates her most is art history itself: the way paintings act as mirrors of their time, offering a window into the social, political, and cultural worlds in which they were created.
An enthusiastic amateur photographer, Camille is passionate about visual storytelling and shares Dostoevsky's conviction that "beauty will save the world."
