Behind the Scenes of Floating Worlds: Prints from Osaka and Kyoto

Join Russell Kelty, Curator of Asian Art, for an exclusive behind the scenes exploration of kamigata ukiyo-e — the woodblock prints of Osaka and Kyoto, newly acquired by AGSA as the first major gift through the M.J.M. Carter AO Bequest.

Created between c.1790 and c.1900, these prints reveal a design language distinct from the better-known Edo school, prized for their inventive compositions and extraordinary craftsmanship. Guests will get a rare, up-close look at woodblock prints from this collection, which have never been on public display, and which will feature in AGSA's upcoming exhibition Floating Worlds: Prints from Osaka and Kyoto.

Russell will guide participants through the history and artistry of the Kamigata region, as well as the culture which fostered the rise of this distinctive print genre. As part of the session, guests will take part in an in-depth examination of a print from the collection and will receive a copy to take home with them. There will be time for questions and conversation about the collection and the work of caring for and interpreting it, before the event concludes with a relaxed lunch, where guests can continue the discussion and connect with fellow members in an intimate setting.
