Behind the Scenes: Namatjira and Ntaria/Hermannsburg Watercolours
Thurs 21 May, 10.30am - 1.30pm
$160 for Members or $175 for Guests
Join Curator Gloria Strzelecki for an exclusive behind the scenes viewing of Western Aranda watercolours by Albert Namatjira and his ‘Hermannsburg School’ contemporaries, painted around Ntaria (Hermannsburg) since the 1930s.
This is a rare opportunity to see historical works currently not on display from one of Australia’s earliest and most renowned Aboriginal art movements. The viewing includes a guided conversation about these special watercolours with Gloria, the Acting Curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art, and insights into their care and treatment from Artlab’s Principal Conservator of Paper, Aquila Evill. Among paintings you will encounter is Namatjira’s Illum-Baura (Haasts Bluff), Central Australia, which in 1939 became the first work by an Aboriginal artist to be acquired by a state gallery.
Afterwards, you will see and discuss an installation in progress of newly acquired watercolours from Ntaria as they go on display for the first time, before being invited to enjoy lunch with Gloria at AGSA_eat.
Cost of lunch is included in the ticket price.
Places are limited, book early to secure your spot.
