When is AGSA recruiting new volunteers?

Expressions of interest are always invited.

Gallery Guide applications will open in April 2026. Successful applicants for guiding will commence their training in October 2026 to begin official Guiding in October 2027.

Are there any qualifications or specific experience needed to be a volunteer/guide?

No formal qualifications or experience are required, but a warm and welcoming attitude, and a genuine interest in art and AGSA are essential.

Are there any age limits to volunteer at AGSA?

AGSA volunteers must be over 18 years of age and will be asked to acquire a Working with Children's Check from the Department of Human Services before they can commence volunteering.

Do I receive training in my volunteer role?

All Front of House volunteers will be provided with training as well as invitations to attend information sessions about new exhibitions and displays.

The AGSA Trainee Guide Program requires you to commit to a year-long training program every Tuesday (plus study time) during school terms.

How much time do I need to commit as a Front of House volunteer?

As little or as much as you can offer.

The amount of time we ask you to commit to your volunteering is dependent on your role and your availability. We will work with you to ensure volunteering complements your schedule and lifestyle. Usually we require a minimum of 1 shift a week to ensure you stay connected and up to date with the Gallery.

AGSA is an institution that is open 10am – 5pm 7 days a week, 364 days a year. Our roster is structured around three shifts a day – a morning shift, lunchtime shift and the afternoon shift. These shifts are 2 ½ hours long and volunteers are required to be positioned at our Vestibule Information Desk off North Terrace and at the Atrium Information Desk located at the back of the Gallery near the Restaurant.

What is a Front of House volunteer required to do?

Our Front of House volunteers play a vital role in day-to-day activities by interacting with the public and promoting the role of the Gallery and its collection. Key tasks include confidently engaging/welcoming and directing gallery visitors to exhibitions, special displays and works of art, answering visitor questions, and providing information about guided tours, talks, events and activities.

During AGSA’s exhibition calendar opportunities arise which offer our Front of House volunteers’ situations to expand on their roles and responsibilities. These experiences could be both during opening hours or are after hour events involving invigilation, facilitation, research and information sharing.

What makes a good volunteer?

  • Be flexible and inclusive.
  • A good communicator.
  • Interest in the Arts, the AGSA collection and exhibition calendar.
  • Reliable and prepared to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Be an advocate for AGSA and our values.
  • Have the willingness to listen and learn.
  • A sound level of computer skills/IT would be helpful.

Do you require any screening checks?

All roles will require a Working with Children Check from the Department of Human Services which may take a few weeks to complete. Our Front of House officers are more than happy to step you through this process. This is in keeping with our Child Safe Environment Policy.

Do you get paid for volunteering?

No, volunteering is unpaid opportunity.

Can I go on holidays?

Yes, once training is completed. We just ask for advanced notice for planning purposes and the length of time away may impact requirements on return. This is negotiated with a Front of House Officer.

Who can I can contact if I still have more questions?
