When is AGSA recruiting new Gallery Guides?

Applications for the 2026 Gallery Guide intake will open in April 2026.The successful applicants will commence the Trainee Guide Program in October 2026, with official guiding beginning in October 2027.Please note applying to be a Gallery guide does not guarantee acceptance. There is a selection process which includes an interview and presentation to a selection panel.

Do I need qualifications or previous experience to become a Gallery Guide?

No formal qualifications or guiding experience are required. A warm, welcoming attitude, curiosity, and a genuine interest in art and AGSA are essential.

Are there age limits for volunteering as a Gallery Guide?

Yes. Gallery Guides must be over 18 years of age and will be required to obtain a Working with Children Check from the Department of Human Services prior to commencing the role. This is in keeping with our Child Safe Environment Policy.

What training will I receive?

AGSA Guides undertake a year‑long Trainee Guide Program, delivered every Tuesday during South Australian school terms (10am – 3pm). Training includes art interpretation, inquiry-based learning, presentation skills, gallery teaching principles, and deep engagement with AGSA’s collection and exhibitions. Additional time is required for reading and research. Attendance at all training sessions is expected.

How much time do I need to commit as a Gallery Guide?

  • Training year: Tuesdays 10am–3pm during school terms, from 13 October 2026. Attendance is required.
  • Post‑training commitment: At least two years of guiding, delivering a minimum of four tours per month to diverse audiences, including school students and families.
  • Continuing Education: Following a 12 month training program regular attendance at Tuesday sessions (10am–12pm) to maintain currency in collection knowledge, exhibitions and guiding practice is required. There is also an ongoing assessment called Art in Five which is a presentation and paper required around every 18 months. From time to time you may be requested to upskill and be shadowed for a tour.

What makes a good Gallery Guide?

A great AGSA Guide is flexible, inclusive, and communicates clearly. Guides should be curious about art and ideas, reliable, collaborative, willing to learn, supportive of AGSA’s values, and comfortable using digital tools for research and communication.

Do I need any screening checks?

Yes. All Guides require a Working with Children Check from the Department of Human Services. Processing may take several weeks. Our Front of House Officers are more than happy to step you through this process. This requirement aligns with AGSA’s Child Safe Environment Policy.

Is the Gallery Guide role paid?

No. Guiding at AGSA is a voluntary, unpaid role.

Can I take holidays while volunteering?

Yes, after training is completed. AGSA simply asks that Guides provide advance notice for planning and scheduling purposes and you may need to do some extra CEP for agreed extended absences.
