    This tentative, unfinished charcoal drawing was probably sketched outdoors and reveals Heysen’s initial ideas for the composition of Mystic Morn.  In the painting he changed the placement and direction of movement of the cows and eliminated a tree in the right foreground, to help create a more balanced, harmonious composition.
