WALL LABEL: Hans Heysen: The Creative Journey, 1992
This is one of Heysen’s compositional studies leading to the 1929 oil painting Patawarta, Land of the Oratunga. It would have been worked up in the studio from drawings made on location in the Flinders Ranges, like those shown in this exhibition. By this stage of his career Heysen often created his finished oils and watercolours from less detailed compositional studies than he had used earlier in his career.
