Julia Margaret Cameron was born in 1815 in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, and educated in France before she moved to England in 1848 with her husband and six children. She took up photography in earnest at the age of forty-eight after receiving a camera as a gift from her daughter and son-in-law in December 1863.

In England, Cameron moved in a social circle that included many of the most influential scientists, academics, writers and artists of Victorian England, many of whom she photographed. While Cameron made direct portraits of her family and friends, she also asked them to pose for her as biblical, historical or allegorical figures.

In St Agnes (Alice Liddell), Cameron has photographed the adolescent Alice Liddell. As a child, Liddell was the inspiration for Lewis Carrolls (Charles L. Dodgson) famous literary works, Alices Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There (1872).
