Kevin Grey combines contemporary industrial processes with the heritage of historic English metalwork to create original contemporary silver sculptural forms. Having previously worked for the luxury automotive industry for twenty years, where he developed a wealth of hand-crafted techniques working for Rolls Royce, Bentley and Morgan Motor Company, Grey subsequently studied at the Birmingham School of Jewellery, from which he graduated in 2009.
In his works, Grey combines hand-cut flat strips of silver using tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, an arc-welding technique that utilises electricity to melt and combine metals with great precision. In Serriform silver, 2013, these labour-intensive techniques are applied such that the silver strips are manipulated to create a notched rim, which contrasts with the smooth internal surface, bringing organic and geometric shapes together. At times the silver elements in this work are polished and rough, and light and dark, creating a unique and bold contemporary sculptural vessel.
