  • WALL LABEL: A Beautiful Line: Italian prints from Mantegna to Piranesi, 2012

     

    Cornelis Cort was a Dutch printmaker who, after moving to Italy in 1565 and until his death in 1578, exerted a profound influence on Italian printmaking.  His great technical skill as an engraver influenced Agostino Carracci and a generation of younger printmakers both in Italy and in the north. Cort’s technical mastery is abundantly evident in this engraving. His experiments with the swelling and tapering line – the so-called ‘schwellende Taille’ – is visible in the monumental figure of Justice in the foreground. By varying the depth and width of the burin lines and thereby extending the print’s tonal range, he was able to create a powerful sense of three-dimensional form.
