This work titled, 'Flying Ducks light' from 2021 is by the late furniture designer Khai Liew (1952-2023). This sculptural light is formed with horizontal lengths of American walnut timber with the focus of additional pieces of timber elegantly 'folded' over featuring light sources underneath. A late example of Liew's practice in contemporary furniture, this light references flying duck, ceramic wall sculptures, which were popular in domestic spaces in the mid-twentieth century. Like much of Liew's later work, a sense of whimsy imbues this light form with it's reference to kitsch Australian domestic interior decoration, similar to the work the designer produced for his interior commission for Sydney-based collector Judith Neilson. Taking inspiration from her young grandchildren, many of the works in this commission drew on a a sense of childish play and imagination.
