Throughout his practice, Vincent Namatjira has established himself as a celebrated portrait artist and a satirical chronicler of Australian history and identity. Vincent paints portraits of important figures in his life, as well as those who are famously political, examining the politics of history, power and leadership through a contemporary Aboriginal lens. Using humour and parody, Vincent encourages discussions of difficult topics; he also possesses the ability to reduce the power attached to particular figures to challenge a viewer’s potential bias. A Western Aranda man, Namatjira is the great-grandson of renowned Ntaria watercolour painter Albert Namatjira.
