Tiger Yaltangki lives in Indulkana in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in north western South Australia. In his boldly coloured, figurative canvasses he draws upon the influence of supernatural spirits, known as Mamu. These spirits provide guidance for and incite fear in Anangu. Yaltangki is also a fan of science fiction and he utilises characters from his favourite television programs, including Doctor Who and The Mighty Boosh, to populate his paintings. For him all of these sources are equally valid, each informs the other creating a cast of characters where lived experience, popular television and traditional belied systems coalesce.

Yaltangki’s appreciation for and understanding of colour is one of his trademarks. Each day in the art centre he makes a careful selection of his favourite hue, often choosing to paint his boots and Akubra hat with the chosen colour.

Tiger Yaltangki’s paintings are on display at the Art Gallery of South Australia during Magic Object.
